Question: Why some people cannot meditate?
Answer: Many people asked the Buddha why they couldn’t meditate? Here’s what Buddha said…
Many spiritual practitioners during Buddha’s time were following the Vedic techniques of meditation and Samadhi. They could still their minds only during meditation. But soon after, the mind would come back to its noisy state very quickly. Therefore, they did not experience much of a change in their nature. They still had anger, hatred, jealousy, competitiveness, etc. They were expecting that breath control, asanas, or mantras would take away all negativity which was a wrong understanding. They were not making any efforts from their side to dissolve these impurities of the mind. Thus Buddha laid down the path clearly.
Step 1: Sheel – Morality
Take vows to get over internal negativity and stick to the vow even at the cost of friendship, name, fame, money, etc. To help with keeping the vows, attending a weekly knowledge session of Buddha’s sutras was encouraged.
Step 2: Samadhi – Meditation leading to Samadhi
If the inner environment is free from negativism then only can meditation lead one to Samadhi. If the inner cleanliness is not attained, even if one might meditate 2-3 times a day, he will NOT reach Samadhi even in 100 years of practice. Therefore, one must practice Sheel extremely sincerely at any cost to progress to Samadhi.
Step 3: Panya – Self-realization
Only the higher states of Samadhi can evoke Self-realization. Inner wisdom starts sprouting gradually for a Samadhistha and he soon attains the Supreme Truth.
