How do thoughts generate in the mind?

Question:

How does the thought generate in our mind?

Answer:

Thoughts generate out of the subconscious. Now what is the quality of your subconscious? It depends on the conditioning of your mind from:

  • Associations [people] – associations are the types of people you hangout with/live with/work with. If they are competitive & jealous kind, for e.g. that is the kind of topics that your mind is exposed to. That will influence the quality of the thoughts that emerge from your subconscious.
  • Atmosphere– If your atmosphere is filled with Television shows day & night for e.g. that’s what influences your thoughts again.
  • Food– If alcohol is a daily dose, it makes your nerves dull & affects your Prakriti making you Tamasic & recording Tamasic conditioning in your subconscious.

You are responsible for maintaining the quality of your subconscious. Recognize that all raagas & dveshas that I am stuck in have arisen from the 5 senses & it is nothing but a play of the elements. Food, associations & atmosphere is that play of the elements, got it?

Question:

I am aware that when I meditate I am bombarded with thoughts at the beginning and I try not to get involved or swayed away by the thoughts…but sometimes even after telling myself to be aware I end up traveling with a thought (hope this make sense) but after a while I tend to come back (regaining awareness I guess).  Now is there a way “improve” awareness (Not sure if this is even the right question).  Please share some tips

Answer:

It is very important to practice awareness. Yes, I said practice, ABHYASA. It has to be done constantly, incessantly, without a gap. You must practice to keep watching the mind. Watch the thoughts that are coming & going. Stop reading now, close your eyes & watch your mind now…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Were there any thoughts?

When you watch the mind, it stops. Just like, when you ignore a mischievous kid playing, he makes more noise & the moment you look at him with big eyes [without saying a word], he stops.

You must train your mind like you would train your child. Keep watching it again & again. In office, in the grocery store, while driving, while you are with kids, while you are cooking, while shopping, while talking, while doing everything, all the time, all the time, all the time, keep watching what thoughts are coming & going. This is ABHYASA. This is ‘live in the present moment.’

This is the practice of increasing awareness. When this becomes a living reality after incessant practice, you will notice that the mind has learnt to be quieter & quieter. It has become disciplined. This will definitely reflect in your meditation. Work on this starting now!
